Lead Teacher: Valeri Nevin
Materials Needed: Pillow, blanket, and sports bottle or sippy cup with child's name on it.
Description: This class is for children who will be 18 months to 2 years old by the first day of co-op. This year we will be leaning the basic colors. We will learn about one color every week for each month. Holidays and seasons will be incorporated into the colors. To accomplish this we will read books, color pages, make crafts and play games. We will have music in the morning, quiet time after lunch (where the children watch a movie and rest) and gym time either in one of the great rooms or outside, weather permitting. Some weeks we will have what I call an "Outstanding Child of the Week." They will be responsible for bringing the snack on that day. We will have parties for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter and at the end of the year. It is not necessary to purchase the usual supplies since I am asking each family to contribute $3 for this purpose. This payment will also cover a gift exchange at Christmas.
Class Name: 3-Year Olds Class

Class Name: 4-Year Olds Class
Lead Teacher: Connie Davidson
Materials Needed: A $4.00 supplies fee will be collected at the beginning of the year. This will cover the cost of the ABC notebook, as well as all of the crayons, markers, glue, etc. that we will use for the year. Each child will be assigned a "Star of the Day" schedule throughout the year. The child whose designated as the "Star of the day" will also need to bring snacks and drinks for the class on their special day. The following is a list of supplies that would be welcome donations: cotton balls, paper plates (we use
these a lot!), yarn, ribbon and lace, cardboard egg cartons, magazines, stickers, macaroni pasta, material and old fast food toys (to be given out as prizes for our ABC Bingo).
Description: This class is for children who will be 4 by the first day of co-op. Our class is very busy! We start off each day with circle time, where we focus on the weather, letter of the day, birthdays, days of the week, months of the year and seasons. Our Star of the Day is identified, and he or she has a share time. We state the Pledge of Allegiance. We then work on our ABC Journal, which is a weekly tactile/sensory craft that is collected in a notebook and sent home near the end of the year. Music time usually follows where the children learn fun, bible songs and focus on rhythm. The children then move into free time where we may pull out playdoh, stamps, puzzles, the parachute or various other learning activities. One of our favorite games is ABC Bingo that reinforces sights and sounds of the letters. It is highly effective and the children love to win prizes. We always have a story to quiet down and settle before lunch. After lunch, we have P.E. in the great room or gym and then we come back for a craft, science project or a story. Fourth hour will be reserved for unwinding after a long day. We usually have a snack (brought by our Star of the Day), special guests, bible stories and/or special parties. We hope to have the fire department, police officer, and Zoo come to visit. We incorporate many Language arts activities, including upper and lower case ABC's, recognition of opposites, recognizing our names, addresses, beginning writing skills, cutting skills, etc. Each week we will concentrate on a specific letter and many of the activities will center around that letter. We also focus on Math skills concentrating on numbers, sorting, telephone number recognition and simple addition/subtraction concepts. Science will touch on weather, seasons, parts of the body, senses, plants, etc.

year's debate topic.
Length of course: one year
If one year, are new students accepted second semester: Students may petition teacher for an interview.
Description of course - first semester: Students will learn to research; to write
persuasive arguments for and against the current year's debate topic; to present
their arguments in class as well as in one practice session and at least two
tournaments per semester. Students will study policy debate theory and the rules
sanctioned by the National Christian Forensics and Communication Association
(www.ncfca.org). Because students will eventually debate as a two-person team, a
commitment to the weekly class and to the two fall tournaments (November and
December) is requested for this first semester. Attendance at a Communicators for
Christ seminar is highly recommended, but not a requirement to take debate.
Description of course - second semester: Students will continue to research on
the current resolution and re-write both their affirmative and negative cases in
preparation for the January, February, and March tournaments.
Prerequisite to taking this class: Must be a high school student.
Books to purchase and approximate cost: An Introduction to Argumentation &
Debate by Christy Shipe is $13.00, and, for HSLDA members, it is $11.00. Books
may be purchased online at www.hslda.org/bookstore. The supplemental book of
evidence (yet to be published) on the current year's debate topic will probably cost
around $20. If we can get a quantity discount by ordering as a group, we will do so.
Materials to purchase and approximate cost: Computer with internet access;
notebook for taking notes; blue pens; one each black and red pens; several pads of
legal size (8 ½" X 17") notebook paper; portable plastic box for storing and labeling
evidence from research.
Time required outside of class for homework: Yes! Homework includes research on the internet, writing and practicing speeches, and, later on, electronic communication with a partner. Comments from tournament ballots will help determine the direction for re-working all cases.
Time required outside of class for practices/performance: At least 2 tournaments and one practice session per semester. Tournaments may be one or two days. A practice session may be all morning or all afternoon.
Parent involvement required: Participation in all tournaments requires each team
of two students to provide a parent to serve as a judge and a parent to serve as a
timer. Therefore, parents are required to attend the tournaments with their student. In addition to the orientation to judging provided by the class instructor, onsite training is given for judging and timing before the start of every tournament. Parents' assignments for judging and timing are determined by the tournament director.
Will grade be assigned: I'd prefer not to assign a grade because almost all of the
preparation for debate will take place at home. Therefore, I believe that the parents
are in the best position to know if their student is working up to his or her potential.
In addition to teaching debate theory, I see my role as one to encourage and
challenge the students to think and research deeply on the current year's debate
topic. Parents will direct and guide students in debate preparation, while I set the
pace for the students' best efforts in content and presentation skills.
Must requirements be met at certain intervals to continue in the class: yes
Will there be weekly assignment sheets to be signed by the parent:
Number of high school credit hours earned if all requirements are met: 1/2
credit per semester upon completion of participation in at least two tournaments per
semester.

Class Size:
Description: Julie Bogart's English 1 is designed for freshmen and sophomores (and anyone older who feels behind in writing). It is good preparation for Julie's Advanced Composition for juniors and seniors.
Course Description:
My emphasis in teaching is, as always, cultivating a strong connection between the writer and his or her writing. Students will discover how to make their writing more powerful, how to incorporate personal experience and anecdote into their academic writing, how to structure a sound essay so that it is not only well-argued, but also enjoyable to read. My aim is to make flat writing come to life. We will do far more revising than original writing and I also use lots of exploratory exercises to get those writing juices going.
In addition to learning about the writing process and the basics of academic essay formats, we will read 9 books. Those books will provide the basis for some of the writing exercises we doMy objective is to deepen students' abilities to identify themes, to see literary elements and to grapple with the issues the books raise using a variety of writing tools. In addition, we'll cover the basics of grammar and punctuation using weekly dictation passages drawn from the texts. The dictation portion of the course requires parental involvement once per week.
Materials: The High School Writing book is normally $49.99. It is a digital download that can be printed out as we use it for each week and kept in a notebook. For the co-op, I am offering it for $35.00. The Language Arts materials that correspond to the literature include the dictation passages, grammar and punctuation notes and the Think Piece questions that help students investigate the novels. Each one is $7.00. There is one set per book. These materials are required for the class.
