Preschool Handbook


Please note:  The Learning Tree's Nursery-Kindergarten program is a supplement to your own education that you choose.


EXPECTATIONS

Director 
1.  Oversee area.
2.  Help find any lead teacher that is needed.
3.  Meet with lead teachers.
4.  Help with any conflicts as needed.

Lead Teacher
1.  Be in class for 2 hours.
2.  Plan lessons for all 4 hours.
3.  Communicate with parents.
4.  Keep Director updated with any problems with parents or volunteers.
5.  Let volunteers know lesson plans and responsibilities.

Volunteers
1.  Be in the class assigned to.
2.  Be on time.
3.  Be responsible to find a sub or call sub-coordinator.
4.  Help lead teacher, music teacher or physical education teacher.
5.  Contact someone if you are alone.  Always at least 2 adults in class.


HELPFUL HINTS

1.  Be positive.  Use positive language reinforcement whenever possible.
2.  Be comfortable.
3.  Enjoy yourself.
4.  Ask questions.  Don't be afraid to ask Lead Teacher or Director questions or offer comments


CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

Illness Policy
We ask that children with the following symptoms not attend:
1.  Colored mucus
2.  Diarrhea, vomiting or nausea
3.  Eye drainage- colored
4.  Virus or contagious infection
5.  Rashes (including bleeding diaper rash)
6.  Head lice
7.  Fever within the last 24 hours
If child develops one of these symptoms in class, please get parent.

Nursery
1.  If what you need is not in the room, check with Lead Teacher or Director.
2.  4 babies per adult.
3.  Always at least 2 adults.
4.  Learning Tree will provide snacks and wipes.
5.  If you cannot calm the child, have someone bring the mom to the nursery.
6.  Change diapers.

2's, 3's, 4's
1.  Always at least 2 adults in room.
2.  If child is not potty trained, feel free to get parent to change child.
3.  Will have music and PE time.
4.  Help Lead Teacher.

Kindergarten
1.  Always at least 2 adults in room.
2.  Music and PE time.
3.  Help Lead Teacher.


OTHER POLICIES

1.  Any child being disruptive in class, contact parent.  After 3 times that 
you have notified parent, parent will need to sit with child for 2 weeks in 
a row when child is in class to be permitted back in alone.

2.  When a child bites, punches, or hits another child or teacher, parent 
will be notified.  After 3 times, parent will be required to attend class 
with the child 3 weeks in a row before child is allowed to attend class 
alone.  (Parent of child that was bitten/punched/hit/hurt will be notified 
immediately.)

3.  Injury to child, contact parent immediately.  Kitchen by nursery has ice.  
Please let parent apply any first aid items other than ice.

4.  Touching inappropriately, contact parent immediately.  If persists, parent 
will need to sit in the class room for 2 weeks before the child is allowed to 
attend alone.

5.  We do not change diapers, only in Nursery.  Parents can change toddler or 
preschool diapers.

6.  Child vomiting in classroom, keep children away.  Find parent and contact 
Facilities.

7.  If vomiting or urine spill in bathroom, clean up using cleaning supplies and 
contact Facilities.

8. Toilet or sink problem, contact Facilities immediately.


PARENT RESPONSIBILITY

1.  Label all children's items.

2.  Appropriate clothing for season.  Please make sure children have coats or 
jackets, gloves, and hats for the season.  If the weather is nice, they will 
possibly go outside.

3.  Parents must eat lunch with their children.  Families are allowed to eat in 
the Preschool and Kindergarten areas, but MUST clean up their mess by 
throwing away garbage and picking up leftover lunch items.

4.  Children are allowed to bring in special treats.  Please let Lead Teacher 
know ahead of time.

5.  Within 10 minutes after co-op ends, child needs to be picked up.  If a 
sibling can pick up child at any time, parent needs to let Lead Teacher 
know that siblings can pick up.

6.  If for someone reason you will not be at co-op or have to leave for an 
emergency, please let Lead Teacher know who will be responsible for your 
child.

7.  Sign out at Preschool desk if you have to leave the co-op.

8.  If your child has been disruptive or hurts another child, you will be 
notified.

9.  If your child has hurt another child or been disruptive more than 3 
times, you will be asked to sit with your child 3 weeks in a row, before he 
or she will be allowed back in class alone.

10.  You will be notified if your child has been hurt.

11.  If your child is in the Preschool class and your child is not potty trained, 
we may ask you to change the diaper.

12.  Do not assume you can drop extra children off in the Nursery or a Preschool
or Kindergarten class on a Monday morning without contacting the Lead Teacher 
ahead of time. 

13.  Please do not send your child into class with food to eat.  Please sit with 
them outside the classroom and let them finish eating first.  It is disruptive to 
the class.  Teachers provide snack time.

14.  If your child brings a toy to co-op, we ask that you keep it with you 
during co-op. 


FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURE

1.  Nursery - Use cribs to put babies in and wheel them outside.  4 babies 
per crib.  Wheel to the parking lot.

2.  2's - Kindergarten - Take children out double doors and out to parking lot.

3.  Parents please find your child in the parking lot.


TORNADO PROCEDURE

1.  Nursery - Take babies to inside rooms without outside windows.

2.  2's - Kindergarten - Take the children to the inside 2's room away from 
outside windows.
